Beschrijving

Bestevaer 2 is designed by her owner Gerard Dijkstra for short-handed, long distance voyaging in cold climates, but she is equally at home in the tropics.  She is the first of the well proven Bestevaer series sailing yachts which are known for their comfort, strength, and performance. Bestevaer 2 is a fast-cruising version of the original single-handed racer which was designed and sailed by Gerard Dijkstra in 1976.  This Bestevaer 53 is less extreme (more beam, less draft) than her predecessor yet she retains many of the original characteristics.

Bestevaer 2 designed and owned by Gerard Dykstra himself

Bestevaer 2 is designed by her owner Gerard Dijkstra for short-handed, long distance voyaging in cold climates, but she is equally at home in the tropics.  She is the first of the well proven Bestevaer series sailing yachts which are known for their comfort, strength, and performance. Bestevaer 2 is a fast-cruising version of the original single-handed racer which was designed and sailed by Gerard Dijkstra in 1976.  This Bestevaer 53 is less extreme (more beam, less draft) than her predecessor yet she retains many of the original characteristics.

Mr. Dykstra says about his yacht, after sailing about 30.000nm in 10 years: “What is probably the most outstanding feature of the design is the behavior in a seaway, also going to windward at speed. Due to her fine pilot cutter bow she is not stopped, but slices through the waves. Her moderate sail area / displacement and length / displacement ratio also makes for good behavior. ”

Performance is enhanced by the maximized waterline length of the pilot cutter.  Good sailing performance is an important safety factor and together with the weather routing software on board the chances of avoiding the worst of the weather are increased. When talking comfort and performance the 1800 l water ballast needs mentioning.  The 1800 l equals 8 degrees of heel in upright condition.  This means that one can sail with same performance at less heel, or at higher performance with same heel as a no-water ballast yacht.   When broad reaching the water ballast steadies the boat for course keeping. The extreme ends of the boat are kept light to reduce pitching.

The 7 mm aluminium hull plating gives peace of mind when sailing in cold climates where ice might be encountered. The bow is reinforced with 10 mm plating and extra longitudinal structure for the same purpose.  Three watertight bulkheads are fitted, making the yacht a truly “one compartment” vessel.  Which means she can be brought home with any one of the four compartments flooded.  Substantial integrated aluminium bollard are welded in the deck structure.

Bestevaer 2 is tiller steered and to make this possible the rudder is carefully balanced, the tiller is telescopic and a power ratio of 1.3 in the steering linkage further reduces the forces on the tiller. The helmsman will find the extendable bowsprit a plus when power reaching under gennaker. The tiller makes the use of a windvane practical.

The dry exhaust and bilge cooling tank for the engine work very well.  There is no water ingress possible through the exhaust and there are no weed filters which can be clogged. In severe freezing weather there is no need to drain the engine seawater cooling system.   This also goes for the seacocks; they are all fitted well above the waterline on aluminium standpipes.  The number of through hull openings below the waterline have been minimized. The propellor can be inspected or even accessed from inside the ship.
