If you are looking for a sailboat that is friendly to sail, fun for the whole family, and simply feels good on the helm, then look no further. Discovery, could be your next boat.
You may not have heard of the yacht design firm "J and J Design" from Europe, but since the 1980's, their designs have promoted such yachts from Bavaria, Elan, Dufour, and Jeanneau. Many of the Bavaria's earlier trademarks have carried themselves through to their latest models. Proof that if something works, which change it.
Bavaria has been in the boat business since the 1980's, and their designs have evolved from contemporary to modern, as design elements evolved. Yet they have kept to their roots and many signature design elements have proven the test of time.
Why Should You Buy This Boat?
To start, the functionality of the walk-through transom equally welcomes crew and guests alike aboard Discovery. Today's sailing families have needs that require kayaks or paddle boards, and the transom can do double duty in boarding. For swimmers and snorkelers, an integrated swim ladder is a fine addition.
The first thing you notice is the warm oiled teak cockpit sole and seats. Oiled teak is easy to maintain, and if anything, it gives you a reason to go down to the boat. Further if you ever drop wine, it will not stain. If you rather not oil the teak, just let it naturally fade to a stately grey with no unsightly peeling. Further oiled teak accents can be seen throughout, from the hatch cover to the walk-through bow pulpit. These maybe little details, but they are definitely a eye catcher dockside, that further illustrates an owner's pride and care.
Solid Rigging and Class 'A' Offshore Classified
The 7/8ths fractional rig, provides a sailplane that is easier to sail. Having a bigger main and somewhat smaller foresails to handle, it makes tacking easier and overall sail handling easier. Also the loading from the shrouds are directly attached to the structural ribs behind the bulkhead, leading directly to the keel.
Also, what you have here is a Class ‘A’ ocean going vessel. This means this vessel is capable to navigate the open ocean and surpass Force 8 on the Beaufort scale (over 40 knot fresh gale), and surpass waves greater than 4 meters (over 12 feet). This is a very stringent design parameter from Europe, encompassing many elements of the boat. You may not sail under these conditions, but its nice to know that Discovery can weather it out.
When you walk down into the salon, you are greeted with pride of ownership. From the teak and holy sole, warm wood work, to a well detailed galley and well accented fabric, you know you are on something special. Even the curved storage fiddles want you to open them up. With multiple opening ports, you can catch a cool breeze. And if the mid-day sun is too strong, the main and fore cabin hatches have blinds to thwart its brightness. Equally effective for those who like to sleep in.
With an Espar heating system, you can easily extend your cruising calendar. From the aft cabin to the forepeak, all areas can be a few degrees warmer in comfort. Further, with shore power, their is a 220v electric resistor heating element. Emitting dry heat, it should also do a decent job of tackling some of the humidity that persists in West Coast rainy winters.
With an aft head, this is more of a room that an afterthought tight space that you maybe accustomed to. Easily interchangeable as a shower, you even have additional storage behind a locker. Though I expect that people will not usually spend a long time here, but with its inviting appointments, one could be excused.
