Samuel Crocker’s design #234, the 36-foot Emily Marshall is a gaff-rigged yawl built by the George Gulliford yard in Saugus, Massachusetts in 1946. She was commissioned for then Commander, later Rear Admiral, naval historian and Pulitzer Prize winning author, Samuel Elliot Morrison who sailed her extensively along the coast of New England and particularly around the waters of Mount Desert Island, ME for many years..
In 2002-2003 EMILY MARSHALL was rebuilt to a “better than new” standard by Brion Reiff Boat Builders of Brooklin, Maine. All structural hull and deck members were replaced along with her decks and house, all propulsion, fuel, plumbing, electrical & rigging systems were replaced, and finally her interior accommodations were redesigned and rebuilt in such a way as to have made a major improvement over her original layout.
The forward berth was enlarged and cabinetry was added to the main saloon. She has a two-burner propane stove with oven and a top-loading ice box. The central feature of the interior is the Lunenburg Foundry Fisherman Number One cast iron wood-burning stove. This bit of traditional hardware adds to the ambience below decks.
With her full keel, spoon bow and round bilges, Emily Marshall is built of fir planking over steam-bent frames. Her varnished cabin top and cockpit is mahogany and she has a main and mizzen mast of fir and spruce booms. Her Gambell & Hunter mainsail, mizzen and jib were all new in 2005. Under power, Emily Marshall is pushed by a 2002 30 hp Westerbeke and carries 50 gallons of diesel.
Emily Marshall delivers excellent sailing characteristics and for anyone with an eye toward classic lines, she will not disappoint. She has even graced the Wooden Boats calendar in two separate years as “Miss August & Miss January” in 2005 & 2013.

Classic full keel, attached rudder design with spoon bow, transom stern and rounded bilges. Traditional plank-on-frame construction with fir planking over 1 5/8” x 1 ¾” steam bent frames on 12” centers. -- -Floors are of 1 5/8” oak. Topsides are fir planked with splined seams and bronze screw fasteners. Transom stern is of laminated marine plywood with varnished mahogany exterior. Deck and cabin top beams are of laminated Douglas fir. Decks are marine grade plywood overlaid with fiberglass with a painted exterior surface Cabin sides, cockpit coaming, toe rails and trim are of varnished mahogany. All deck hardware (chocks, cleats, etc.) and stanchions are of cast bronze. Topsides are painted white with red boot and cove stripes.

Access to the chain locker is thru forward cabin. Forward cabin has a generous double berth to starboard with seating and clothes hanging bar opposite to port. Moving aft from the forward cabin one enters the passageway to the main saloon in which (to port) is located a Lunenburg Foundry Fisherman Number One cast iron wood burning cook stove / cabin heater. Underneath the Fisherman stove is an additional source of cabin heating, an engine (heat) supplied radiator with fan. To starboard of the passageway is an enclosed head space equipped with sink basin and Lavac marine toilet plumbed for discharge either overboard or to holding tank (5 gallon). Next aft is the main saloon with settee seating port and starboard outboard of a center line drop leaf dining table with gimbaled shelf located above the table. Outboard of the settees are comfortable and secure sea berths port and starboard. Furthest aft in the main cabin area is the galley with copper sink, stove, ice box and generous storage space to port and navigation station to starboard with a generous quarter berth extending aft from the nav. station under the cockpit seating. The below deck spaces on EMILY MARSHALL are nicely finished off in the Herreshoff style of cream colored painted bulkheads and joinery faces accented by varnished mahogany trim, interior cabin sides and countertops. Natural ventilation and lighting of the below decks area is well provided for with bronze opening ports in all cabins and an opening butterfly hatch in the main saloon overhead. A well laid out 12-volt lighting system along with gimbaled oil lamps is in place for after sunset.
As part of a major refit / restoration in 2002-2003 the interior layout of EMILY MARSHAL was redesigned and rebuilt. The original V-berth configuration of the forward cabin was changed to provide a true double berth, The original full length settees of the main saloon were shortened, sea berths added outboard, cabinetry was added between the main saloon and aft areas of the main cabin to provide for storage and a location for the galley sink and finally the galley was moved to the aft port corner of the main cabin with opposite (to starboard) the addition of a sit down navigation station and quarter berth extending aft under the cockpit seat. The redesign and execution of the changes were done flawlessly making EMILY MARSHALL’s down below spaces much more defined with regard to their purposes & usage without losing any sense of open space

As part of a major refit / restoration of EMILY MARSHALL in 2002-2003 all spars and rigging were inspected for condition. Nothing was found wrong with the spars so these were kept but as a matter of routine replacement and safety all standing and running rigging was replaced
