Some boats have stage presence. When they enter a harbor, every head turns. Trumpy motoryachts have that hard-to-define appeal. Like a Frank Lloyd Wright house or a Rolls Royce, they are a product of their time yet possess a timeless appeal.
Built from the 1920s to 1970s, Trumpy yachts are a study in elegance. Their sleek profile, crisp white hulls and polished wood detailing exude luxury and leisure.
Although more than 400 were built, each Trumpy was meticulously handcrafted to the owner’s specifications. While every Trumpy is unique, the boats have a signature look and always the essential Trumpy embellishment: carved wood scrollwork on the bow that, on close inspection, incorporates a capital T. In their heyday, the boats were de rigueur for members of the aristocracy, among them aviation pioneer Howard Hughes, the Chrysler family, President Hoover, and the Duponts.
Since 1947, Aurora II has only had 7 owners. She is very original. John Trumpy built six Auroras in all. They were his showboats, built to suit himself rather than commissioned by owners. The first Aurora was sold before it was completed. The second Aurora, Aurora II, John Trumpy owned and used for the longest period. She has several features that were John's personal requirements, such as AC.. She will cruise most of the Intra -Coastal without opening bridges provided that you have 14'4" of clearance.. John Trumpy was not a fan of needing to stop at bridges and wait upon a bridge tender.
Aurora II was the first to have air conditioning. She has a clipper bow, a one-off front seat, the mast, full main saloon with a dining saloon down and her styling was based on Trumpy’s favorite features on previous boats, a showcase for the evolution of his designs. She was the last Trumpy to be built in Gloucester, N.J. and she was moved and completed in Annapolis, Maryland, the first to be launched at Trumpy’s last boatyard.
The boat, which is still very original to the way Trumpy built her in 1947, has won awards at Ocean Reef’s Vintage Weekend , Fort Lauderdale Winterfest, and Vero Antique and Classic Boat Show.. The current owner, who is the custodian of other classic wooden boats, has lived on Aurora II to make sure everything is operational. Traveling at 8 knots, with the generator on, she sips fuel at around four gallons per hour.
Trumpys are the ultimate Dream Boats. It’s easy to envisage a leisurely, even presidential afternoon aboard, dining in formal elegance or fishing off the back deck.

Vessel Walk through
Aurora's deckhouse is built of solid teak and has been painstakingly restored. Her aft deck is open with weather cloths wrapped around the station. Comfortable built-in seating that stretches port to starboard is completely aft. The table on the aft deck, located in between the built in seating and the free standing arm chairs, is also a Trumpy design but from the 1950's. The only change from the originally launched Aurora II on the aft deck is the bar behind the starboard wing door storage. The on deck bar locker has glass storage for wine glasses , champagne glasses, built in ice bucket storage , stainless steel sink and below counter refrigerator. The opening wing doors do have glass windows and provide excellent wind protection when needed.
Entering into the main saloon, one passes through the varnished door and finds themselves in a cocoon of elegance that one seldom finds in modern day yachts. The mahogany interior exudes warmth and a state of luxury. On the starboard side as soon as you enter the saloon, there is a built in desk. You can picture John Trumpy sitting at this desk doodling new designs for his yachts. The main saloon has numerous windows providing glorious views while cruising.
The main salon has been remodeled to the style and texture of the 1940's. Plenty of room for free standing arm chairs and she does have a built in L shaped settee located to port and all the way forward in the saloon.
This was the first Trumpy to have A/C.
In the main saloon the AC cabinet is original but the system is modern. There is zone air conditioning throughout the yacht. The main saloon has a Samsung flat screen smart TV, is equipped with XM radio and speakers.
The down below is original and is ready for someone's personal touch. The owner's stateroom is two nearly double bunks with bureau in middle and lockers.
The master suite located is aft with two nearly double berths. Flooring is carpeted. There are abundant drawers and storage in this stateroom. A built in double dresser resides between the two berths and each berth has storage drawers underneath. There are two full sized hanging lockers with slide out clothes poles to allow additional storage. The 4 large opening port lights provide great cross ventilation as well as natural light.
The en-suite head has single sink, shower with vinyl flooring, opening port lights and storage. The toilet is a fresh water vacuum flush with Headhunter pumps.
GUEST STATEROOM AND DAY/GUEST HEAD
The guest stateroom is located amidships, opposite the builtin linen closet.. A large single lies for and aft with a Pullman berth that when in the lowered position is athwart ship. A built dresser is located toward and a full sized hanging locker is located to aft. This hanging locker also has the extendable clothes pole, Flooring is carpeted.
The guest head also serves as the day head. A fresh water vacuum flush head combined with a separate shower stall and sink provides a very usable space. There is one port light.
DINING SALOON AND GALLEY
Proceeding forward one enters into the formal dining saloon which has abundant storage as well as dedicated crystal and china lockers. The full length settee is also a great place to stretch out and watch the flat screen TV. To ensure quiet while dining there is a solid door that closes of the galley and crew areas. This also allows the crew to have their own space away from the owners while cruising. Proceeding forward into the galley.

There is abundant stainless steel clad counter tops, built in storage above and below the large S.S, sink as well as built in storage outboard starboard side that was the original refrigeration locker.
Opening port lights provide natural lighting. The flooring is vinyl.
Proceeding forward of the galley one enters the engine room of AURORA ll. Her GM 471's are separated by a walk way that is covered with diamond plate. One can walk completely around the engines. It will take you a minute to realize that there is space to reach all necessary items in the ER. The complete array of solar panels located on the cabin top of AURORA ll charge the 4D battery bank which makes AURORA ll.a green machine AC compressors are also very easy to reach and service. Racoor filters help to keep both the main engines and the Norther Lights generator running with clean fuel. A small built in work bench is extremely convenient to have in the engine room.
LAUNDRY/ CREW AREA
The crew quarters and laundry facilities are located There are over under twin bunks with storage. A separate shower stall is located outside the head compartment. The head compartment has a fresh water flush vacuum head system, sink and storage. There is a ladder that leads up to the deck.
The Bosch washer just had service including a new water pump (2020). Any one doing laundry will appreciate the separate dryer and counter top for convenience.
HULL AND DECK
AURORA ll has fiber-glassed decks which have withstood the test of time.
On the top deck there is a nine panel solar charger. There are (8) 4 volt, batteries. All DC systems are hooked to this system and are their sole input. At peek charge the system puts out 113 volts at 58 amps.

JOHN TRUMPY, THE MAN AND HIS YACHTS
John Trumpy Sr. emigrated from Bergen, Norway, at the turn of the century. John Trumpy Sr.’s father and grandfather were ship builders in Norway and upon his arrival in America Trumpy had already trained as a naval architect in both Norway and Germany. In 1909 he joined the Mathis Yacht Building Company in NJ as its vice president and naval architect, where he began designing several hundred wooden yachts and other vessels that would bear his name or his design imprimatur
Upon John Mathis’ death in 1943, Trumpy Sr. renamed the company, John Trumpy and Sons, as the next generation of boat builders–his sons John Jr. and Donald–became instrumental in the continuation of the business. In 1947, Trumpy moved the yard from Gloucester City, NJ, to Annapolis, a prime location for boaters traveling up and down the eastern seaboard.
In its Annapolis location–at 204-214 Severn Avenue–the Yard employed more than 130 craftsman who built yachts designed by John Trumpy Sr., to each customer’s needs and wants. The yachts (or houseboats as they were sometimes called) were made of air dried wood–ranging from pine or Honduran mahogany to white oak. Neither the boats nor the accouterments were mass produced. Furniture for the salons and staterooms were made of teak, as were the decks. Joh Trumpy designed magnificent yachts with essential elements that made the yachts distinctive–such as handmade patterns, the Trumpy “scroll” and the attention to detail each craftsman at the Yard brought to his role in the fabrication of the boats.
AURORA ll started life as design number 332. The first AURORA was sold before she was fully commissioned for Johns personal use. AURORA ll was meant to be John's personal family yacht and she is one of a kind. Each of her 7 owners have lavished love on her. She truly is a lovely example of US Maritime History and is sure to turn heads for another 73 years. Her current owner is a live aboard as was the owner before him. A major change in life has made her available for another discriminating yachtsman to enjoy the satisfaction of owning a true one of a kind yacht that is totally hand crafted.
