    A truly unique boat, the Laser 28 was far ahead of its time and has never been replicated.   Designed by Bruce Farr, this is the only trailerable, hoist-launchable, full-headroom racer-cruiser ever built. She weighs only a few hundred pounds more than a J24 or an Etchells, and is rigged with a single point lifting strap. It takes only two people and minutes to launch or retrieve her.   Construction is Kevlar with a Divinycell core. No balsa core to soak up water. The gelcoat and hull paint show this boat's age, but structurally, the boat is as light and strong as when she was built.   The boat is rigged like the original J24, handles like a J24, and like a J24 is raced with 5 or 6, depending on breeze. Unlike a J24, she is considerably faster (PHRF 142), has an inboard engine, 5'10 1/2" headroom, a full galley and a much larger and liveable interior. This boat does a week-long YC cruise every summer, and with all lines are lead back the cockpit, she is effortless to sail shorthanded. Because of her light displacement, nothing pulls hard. Stern pulpit incorporates a drop-down swim ladder: a nice safety feature.   The boat easily sails to its PHRF rating, simply because it is easy to sail. It accelerates quickly out of the start, tacks, and jibes, and responds to good rig tune and trim. The boat has new speed/depth instruments, polars, and a well-tested rig tune matrix. The sail inventory is extensive. Carbon spinnaker pole, end-for-end jibing. In 3 seasons of Newport's competitive PHRF fleet, "Comet" has always finished 1st or 2nd in class.   This boat is currently drysailed, and under the previous owner, hauled every week for cleaning. The keel and rudder were professionally faired in 2015. The boat is been used 50/50 for cruising and racing, about 10 days of each per summer.   The trailer is equipped with 2 large locked boxes to store sails and gear when switching from racing mode to cruising.  No need to load the SUV with all the gear. Because the boat can be drysailed, little maintenance is required and costs (compared to in-the-water storage) are substantially less. We moved the boat around town with a Honda Element. Trailer is a double-axle Triad, some rust, but roadworthy. Engine is a 2001 Bukh 10hp single cylinder w/saildrive. Simple, reliable, and can be rope started should the batteries fail.   Contact via email preferred.
